Greenwood Engineering Limited was formed in 1996, in a management buyout of the Carpet Division of Frederick Greenwood and Sons Limited.

The company has, in both guises, been manufacturing components for carpet weaving since 1860.

In 2004 GEL extended its range of operations by purchasing the business of Lonsdale, toolmakers and precision engineers. The machinery and staff of Lonsdale moved into the Rochdale premises in mid 2004 following a major re-organisation of the site. The two businesses now run side by side, using the same admin and accounting facilities.

GEL now employs around 35 people of whom two thirds work in the carpet loom components (Greenwood) side of the business and one third work in the engineering (Lonsdale) side of the business.
